Boys' Basketball Concludes Impressive State Run

March 10th, 2026

The St. Martin’s boys basketball team concluded an impressive season this week, leaving a lasting mark on the program and our community. Although the Saints fell short in a 55-50 loss to Southern Lab in the Division IV Select semifinals at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, the defeat does not diminish the remarkable achievements of this group.

The atmosphere in Lake Charles was electric as a large group of students and community members traveled to support the team. Back on campus, Middle and Upper School held a watch party in the Martin Family Library, proudly cheering on their fellow Saints.

Head Coach Mike Odom ’92, a proud StM alumnus, noted that the level of enthusiasm surrounding the team this year was unlike anything he had seen before.

“There’s a ton of excitement around this team, and they’re behind these guys because they’re good people,” said Odom. “I’m proud of that. They’re great players, but they’re better people.”

This year marked the school's third appearance in the Top 28 over the last four seasons, a testament to the consistent excellence of the program. During the semifinal matchup, individual performances highlighted the talent within the roster. Kade Vinju ’27 led the scoring with 19 points, including five successful shots from beyond the arc. Beckett Smuck ’27 also delivered a strong performance, contributing 17 points and three rebounds to keep the Saints competitive until the final buzzer.

While the end of a deep playoff run is always difficult, the future of St. Martin’s basketball looks incredibly bright. With a strong core of underclassmen returning and a community backing them, the foundation is set for continued success.

In a post-game interview with the media, Odom noted, “They’re hurting right now, but there’s a ton to be proud of.”

The Saints have established themselves as a perennial contender, and the momentum from this season provides a perfect springboard for the years ahead.
