(And What the Answers Really Tell You)
Every school in the New Orleans area will tell you they're rigorous, caring, and committed to your child. They wouldn't be in business if they didn't. The hard part isn't getting schools to make promises. It's figuring out which ones actually keep them.
After years of walking families through their school search, we've found that the same handful of questions cut through marketing language faster than anything else. They're not trick questions. They're not gotchas. They're the questions that, when answered honestly, reveal almost everything you need to know about whether a school will be a great fit for your family. Here are 10 of them:
1. When students change schools, what happens to their learning? How do you find and close the gaps?
Most families think about school transitions in emotional terms: new teachers, new friends, new routines. Those costs are real. But there's a quieter cost that's easy to miss, and it's academic.
Every school teaches things differently or in a slightly different sequence. One school introduces multiplication in second grade, another in third. One covers a writing skill in fifth grade, and another assumes it was mastered in fourth. When a child moves between schools, those mismatches become gaps. And gaps compound over time.
So ask two things. First, how many transitions does the path ahead actually require? A school that ends at 4th or 8th grade guarantees another search, another transition, and another set of curriculum seams down the road. Second, how does the school handle continuity? How is the curriculum mapped from one grade to the next so nothing falls through the cracks? How are incoming transfer students assessed, and what's the plan for catching them up? And here in southeast Louisiana, it's fair to ask one more: when a hurricane closes school for a week, and lessons get cut short, how does the school make sure that material isn't simply lost?
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that can show you how its curriculum builds deliberately from grade to grade and division to division, has a real process for finding and closing gaps when students transfer in, and can explain how it protects learning when the school year gets disrupted.
2. What's your student-teacher ratio, and how do your teachers actually come to know each child?
Class size matters, but ratios alone don't tell the full story. A school can advertise a 10:1 ratio and still feel impersonal if teachers don't have the structures and time to genuinely know each student.
Ask the second half of this question carefully. Listen for specifics. Do teachers meet regularly to discuss individual students? Do administrators know children by name? Is there an advisory program? When a child is struggling, how quickly does the school notice, and what happens next?
Schools that truly know their students can answer this question with stories. Schools that don't will fall back on numbers and brochure language.
What a strong answer sounds like: A school where faculty can describe specific systems for knowing students well, and where leadership can speak about individual children in real detail.
3. How does the school challenge students academically without compromising their well-being?
This is the question keeping more parents up at night than any other. We want our children to be prepared for college, for careers, for whatever comes next. We don't want them to be anxious, sleep-deprived, or burned out by the time they graduate.
The truth is, rigor and well-being aren't in opposition. The best schools deliver both because they understand that students who are supported emotionally perform better academically.
Watch for two extremes. Schools that brag about how many students take five AP classes at once, or how much homework they assign, may be optimizing for the wrong things. Schools that seem allergic to the word "rigor" may not be preparing students for the real demands of college and life.
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that talks comfortably about both challenge and support, and can describe what they do when a student is struggling with either too much pressure or not enough.
4. How does the school develop character, not just intellect?
Strong test scores are wonderful. So is a child who knows how to be kind, honest, brave, and useful.
This question often surfaces a school's deepest values. Some schools have explicit character formation built into the curriculum through chapel, advisory, service learning, or a defined values framework. Others rely on character emerging naturally from the school culture. Both can work. The question is whether the school has thought about it deliberately.
Ask for examples. What do students do at this school that builds character? How does the school handle moments when a student makes a mistake? What kinds of adults do graduates tend to become?
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that can describe character formation as intentional, not accidental, and can give specific examples of how it shows up in daily life.
5. Who feels at home here, and what does it take for a family to fit in?
This is one of the most important questions you can ask, and one of the hardest for schools to answer honestly.
Every school has a culture. The question is whether that culture is broad enough to welcome your family as you are, or whether it requires you to look, believe, earn, or behave a certain way to fully belong.
Pay close attention to how the school talks about families who are different. Different income levels. Different faith backgrounds. Different family structures. Different parenting styles. Schools that genuinely welcome a range of families will speak about that diversity as a strength, not a checklist.
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that can describe the actual diversity of its community in concrete terms, and can articulate how it welcomes families across faith traditions, backgrounds, and life situations.
6. Can my child be an artist AND an athlete AND a scholar, or will they have to pick a lane?
Many schools quietly push students toward early specialization. The varsity team requires a year-round commitment. The advanced academic track has no flexibility. The school musical conflicts with athletic practices. Required courses squeeze the electives out of the schedule.
Ask how schools structure their programs to make multiple pursuits possible. Are sports cut-based or no-cut? Can a student in the performing arts also play a varsity sport (or two or three)? How does the school handle conflicts between commitments?
The schools that genuinely support multiple interests will point to actual students who do multiple things and succeed at all of them. The schools that don't will say things like "well, in theory it's possible" and then explain why most students choose to specialize.
What a strong answer sounds like: A school where you hear actual examples of students who play sports, perform in the arts, take rigorous academic courses, and lead in the community, all at the same time.
7. How is the school preparing students for a future no one can fully predict?
The world your child graduates into in 10 or 15 years will not look like today's world. The jobs they'll hold may not exist yet. The technologies they'll use are still being invented.
Schools that take this seriously aren't just teaching content. They're teaching students how to learn, how to think across disciplines, how to use new tools, and how to adapt. Look for evidence of design thinking, innovation programs, real-world problem-solving, and meta-cognition (students learning how they learn).
Be skeptical of schools that talk a lot about innovation without showing what that actually looks like in practice. Anyone can buy 3D printers. Not every school focuses on the deep, adaptable skills your child will actually need to shape the future.
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that can describe specific programs, spaces, and curricular elements designed to build adaptable, future-ready students, with examples of student work that prove it's real.
8. What's your faculty retention rate, and what's it like to work here?
This question often surprises school leaders, which is exactly why it's worth asking.
Faculty retention is one of the most reliable signals of school quality. Teachers who love their school stay. Teachers who don't, leave. When you walk into a building, and most of the faculty have been there for years or decades, you're seeing a school where adults are well-supported, students are well-known, and institutional knowledge runs deep.
High turnover is a red flag worth digging into. Why are teachers leaving? Where are they going? What's the relationship between faculty and administration?
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that knows its retention numbers, can speak honestly about turnover, and can describe what it does to invest in faculty growth and wellbeing.
9. What do your graduates say about how prepared they felt, five years after graduation?
College acceptance lists are easy to publish. They're also somewhat misleading. A school can produce an impressive list of acceptances and still graduate students who struggle once they get there.
The real measure of a school is what happens after graduation. Are alumni thriving in college, or are they overwhelmed? Are they pursuing careers they care about? Are they becoming the kinds of adults you'd want your child to become?
Ask the school how it tracks alumni outcomes. Ask if you can talk to graduates from a few years back. Pay attention to whether alumni come back to visit, whether they send their own children to the school, and whether they speak of their experience with genuine affection.
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that can describe alumni outcomes beyond college acceptance, can connect you with graduates from various fields, and can speak to what its graduates do with their lives, not just where they went to college.
10. What does the long-term partnership between school and family actually look like?
You're not just choosing a school. You're choosing a community you'll be part of for years, possibly more than a decade.
You'll show up for back-to-school nights, weekend tournaments, holiday concerts, chapel services, and graduation ceremonies. You'll get to know other parents. You'll lean on the school during difficult years and celebrate with them during great ones.
Ask the school what this relationship looks like over time. How does the school communicate with families? How does it handle disagreements? What happens when a child or a family hits a hard season? Are there families who've been at the school for generations, and if so, why?
The answer to this question often determines whether a school feels like the right fit emotionally, even when everything else lines up on paper.
What a strong answer sounds like: A school that talks about families as long-term partners rather than annual customers, that has multi-generational and multi-sibling families, and that has clear, caring systems for staying connected through every stage of your child's journey.
A Final Thought
The right school for your child won't have the perfect answer to every question. But it will answer honestly, specifically, and with genuine warmth.
