Top 7 Questions Parents Ask In the Admissions Process (and How St. Martin’s Answers Them)
September 3rd, 2025
Choosing a school is a big decision, and you probably have a lot of the same questions as other families: Will my child be known and cared for? Will they be challenged? How does faith shape daily life? At St. Martin’s, we hear these questions every day, and we’d love to share how our approach supports students—and gives parents peace of mind.
- Will my child be known and cared for?
At St. Martin’s, no child is ever just a number. From the very first day, teachers take time to know your child’s personality, strengths, and dreams. We go beyond simply having small class sizes, and intentionally work to build meaningful relationships that help students feel safe, supported, and seen through programming like advisory in Middle and Upper School, buddy relationships with students in other grades, schoolwide chapel services, service learning projects across grade levels, and more. Parents often tell us their children feel “known all across campus”—a feeling that builds confidence and belonging.
- Will they be challenged academically?
Absolutely. Challenge at St. Martin’s doesn’t mean piles of worksheets—it means sparking curiosity and pushing students to think deeply. Our 4-D curriculum is intentionally designed to stretch students just beyond their comfort zones while giving them the tools and encouragement to succeed. Teachers personalize instruction so that every child is both supported and challenged, preparing them not only for the next grade but for a lifetime of learning.
- What role does faith play?
As an Episcopal school, we honor and celebrate faith as a foundation for both character and community. That means chapel services, prayer, and service opportunities are part of student life—but equally important, it means we welcome families of all faith traditions and backgrounds. We don’t teach students what to believe; we invite them to ask questions, explore, and grow spiritually in an environment grounded in respect and love.
- What’s the community like?
Families often say the St. Martin’s community feels like family. Parents build friendships at events, in our Saints Community Organization, and through volunteer opportunities; students find mentors in teachers and coaches and students in other grade levels, too. There’s a genuine sense of belonging that comes from being part of something bigger than yourself. It’s the kind of community where people show up for each other—on the sidelines, in the classroom, and beyond.
- What extracurriculars are available?
What makes our approach different is that no one is pigeonholed here—students aren’t expected to be “just an athlete” or “just an artist.” They’re encouraged to try new things, take risks, and discover surprising strengths along the way. It’s not unusual to see a student who plays on the football team also performing in a musical theatre production, or a budding scientist who also sings in the choir. We believe children are multifaceted, and extracurriculars give them the chance to grow in every direction. Whether your child shines on stage, on the field, or in the lab—or wants to try all three—there’s a place for them to thrive at St. Martin’s.
- How safe is the campus?
Safety is our top priority. Our campus is secure, with trained staff, monitored entrances, automatic mag locks, and clear protocols in place for both daily routines and emergencies. We maintain a strong relationship with local law enforcement, and a full-time, licensed Registered Nurse provides health services for all students.
But safety is more than physical security—it’s also emotional well-being. Children learn best when they feel known, respected, and cared for. From the playground to the classroom, we are committed to creating a community where students feel protected, supported, and free to grow. Two full-time Licensed Professional Counselors offer counseling services to all St. Martin’s and George Cottage students, and our advisory program in Middle and Upper School provides daily and weekly opportunities for connection with faculty and peers. These gatherings go beyond academics, giving space for conversation, guidance, and reflection on the important transitions and challenges of adolescence.
- How does tuition translate into value?
We know investing in an independent school is a big decision. At St. Martin’s, tuition isn’t just about textbooks and classrooms—it’s about providing your child with opportunities that shape their future. Small classes, dedicated teachers, strong academics, robust extracurriculars, faith formation, and a supportive community all combine to create lasting value. Our graduates are leaders across New Orleans and beyond that have helped to shape their communities in the fields of medicine, law, business, policy, real estate, education, politics, the arts, and more. St. Martin’s graduates are critical thinkers prepared not only for college, but for careers that are not yet imagined. The return on investment is a confident, compassionate young person ready for a life of purpose.
We know the school search can feel overwhelming, and we’re here to walk alongside your family. Connect with our Admissions Team—we’d love to answer your questions and help you take the next step.
