Students Study and Celebrate Día de los Muertos
October 30th, 2025
A special table stood in the Dan and Frances White Chapel, glowing with the color and spirit of Día de los Muertos. Colorful paper marigolds framed photos of loved ones and pets who have passed, surrounded by decorated skulls, candles, and delicate papel picado banners. One by one, Middle and Upper School students, faculty, and staff placed personal photos and mementos, along with hundreds of handmade paper flowers, creating a collective expression of remembrance and love.
The community-produced ofrenda was part of a joyful, student-led service that highlights our school's Episcopal tradition. Día de los Muertos aligns with the Episcopal observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days, honoring those who have gone before us. Creating an offering table and offering prayers in remembrance mirrors our own liturgical practice of celebrating the Communion of Saints — the belief that love and faith transcend death. This shared act of remembrance deepens students’ spiritual understanding and reinforces the message that life and death are both held in God’s grace.
The celebration featured music, scripture, and prayers spoken entirely in Spanish, helping students practice their target language. In the last several weeks, students have explored the historical and spiritual meaning of El Día de los Muertos.
Led by Upper School Spanish teacher Melissa Lizarraga, Middle School Spanish teacher Velinda Mascorro, and Middle School World Geography teacher Gene Hernandez, the project exemplified the St. Martin’s approach to academic excellence and real-world readiness—encouraging students to engage deeply with language, culture, and faith.
Even the food in the dining hall reflected today’s theme, extending their learning experience further. Through reflection, dialogue, and shared experience, students came to understand Día de los Muertos not only as a cultural celebration but as a powerful expression of remembrance, family, and community—values that resonate deeply with St. Martin’s own Episcopal tradition.
