Before heading into Mardi Gras Break, Third Grade concluded their eight-week-long multidisciplinary study of the geography and history of the United States with American Heritage Day. The day showcased their intensive studies with a full exhibition of performances and projects in the Solomon Theater and Saints Hall.

Throughout their studies, the students worked on:

• Learning to read and comprehend informational text 
• Learning to create an outline to organize and streamline their thoughts
• Working on editing their own and each other’s work as they pre-write, draft and create a final product
• Learning to paraphrase written text into their own words and write using accurate, interesting and creative written language
• Practicing the art of public speaking and learning to be comfortable sharing their ideas and writings with other people
• Using design thinking to imagine and create these fabulous license plates and amazing landmarks
• Learning to create clear, interesting and informational slideshows with creative animation and transitions

The day began with the performance of American-themed songs and dances and outlining their historical significance. Following their musical performances, the students presented their extensive research through informative slideshows, shared biographies of famous Americans, and hand-crafted models of American landmarks. From research to writing to public speaking and more, our Third Grade students engaged in a rich, immersive learning journey that deepened their understanding of our nation’s history and geography—building not only knowledge, but also empathy, confidence, and a lasting connection to the rich history that helped shape America.
