Second Graders Explore Louisiana in Wide-Ranging Cross-Curricular Study
October 30th, 2023
Second graders recently presented their work in front of family and friends from a cross-curricular unit all about Louisiana. Blending music, physical education, art, science, literacy, and social studies, the unit spanned several months and a variety of topics.
Students began by learning about aspects of Louisiana’s geography, culture, and traditions. Students then researched several of the state’s landmarks so they could design and build 3D models. They visited St. Martin’s fifth grade Louisiana History teacher, Mr. Gene Hernandez, to learn even more before beginning the construction of their landmarks. After creating art pieces based on the Zinnia series from prolific, self-taught Black artist Clementine Hunter, and learning how to play the xylophone, practicing line dances, and discovering classic Louisiana music and songs, second graders then presented all they’d learned to their families, friends, and fellow students in a performance on Louisiana Day.
While Louisiana Day has passed, their study will continue as they study about Louisiana wildlife and coastal areas. In November, the class will take a trip to the Aquarium of the Americas to learn more about wetlands animals. In March, students will expand their understanding of coastal erosion with an experiential learning trip to the Louisiana Children’s Museum.
