Second Graders Explore Louisiana in Cross-Curricular Study
October 29th, 2024
Second graders recently presented their work in front of family and friends from a cross-curricular unit all about Louisiana. Blending music, physical education, art, science, literacy, and social studies, the unit spanned several months and a variety of topics.
Students began by learning about aspects of Louisiana’s geography, culture, and traditions. After researching local fish and wildlife, they took an experiential learning trip to the Audubon Aquarium and also stopped for a quick snack along one of the state’s most famous natural landmarks – the Mississippi River.
Back on campus, students researched several other of the state’s landmarks so they could design and build 3D models. After creating art pieces based on Louisiana artists and discovering classic Louisiana music and songs, second graders then presented all they’d learned to their families, friends, and fellow students in a performance on Louisiana Day.
While Louisiana Day has passed, their study will continue as they study about Louisiana wildlife and coastal areas. In the spring, students will expand their understanding of coastal erosion with an experiential learning trip to the Louisiana Children’s Museum.
