National Honor Society Inducts New Members
April 18th, 2024
The National Honor Society (NHS) inducted several students as the newest members of the prestigious academic organization on April 18, at its annual induction ceremony. The ceremony took place in the Dan and Frances White Chapel, where Alexandra Houghtaling, Bo Fan Hua, Jeremy Hua, Colin Richard, Mary Rodi Stewart, and Eamon Felipe Velasquez were formally welcomed into St. Martin’s Chapter of the NHS. The induction of the new members increased the school’s chapter membership to 46 total members.
The National Honor Society, founded in 1921, is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
St. Martin’s NHS members contribute to the school community in many ways. In particular, each member participates in a tutoring program designed to pair NHS members with students from the Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School who have requested academic support. NHS members continue to pursue their own individual projects in service to St. Martin's and the greater New Orleans community. Dr. Edward Leonard serves as St. Martin's NHS Faculty Sponsor.
