From Curiosity to Commerce: Middle School Makers in the Innovation Lab

March 4th, 2026

What began as a spark of curiosity in the Lasering for Fun and Profit Club has quickly evolved into a burgeoning entrepreneurial endeavor for a group of St. Martin’s Middle School students. This project highlights the impact of providing students with the dedicated space and resources to explore their interests and see where their creativity leads.

Under the direction of Makerspace Coordinator Robby Stanley, club members have been busy in The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design. The students have been crafting handmade bamboo cutting boards, utilizing the advanced tools in the makerspace to move from initial design to finished product.

The hands-on project allows students to develop practical skills that extend far beyond the classroom. From learning the technical aspects of laser engraving to managing the logistics of production, the club offers a unique look at the intersection of design and business.

Eighth grader Meir Naghi ’30 was the first of the group to complete a delivery, recently presenting a beautifully finished piece to Señorita Mascorro. The success of the project is already evident, with the club reaching hundreds of dollars in sales as students prepare for their next round of deliveries.

At St. Martin’s, we love seeing our students dive into projects that foster real-world skills and help them discover new passions. The dedication and hard work shown by these young makers demonstrate the power of an education that encourages students to experiment, iterate, and innovate.
