Theatre Students Visited by Guest Speaker
St. Martin’s theatre students recently had a chance to talk with college student Bridget Purdy. Bridget, a former student of Ms. Meredith Long-Dieth, is currently studying comedy writing and performance at Columbia College in Chicago. Last summer she interned with CBS in Los Angeles. She is spending her last semester of college working at Second City in Chicago, and hopes to build a career writing for film and television. Students discussed job opportunities in the performing arts and the importance of arts education.

Guided by faculty who are experts in their fields, like Long-Dieth, StM students are engaged across a broad spectrum of the visual and performing arts. Students are encouraged to dig deep, take risks, and reach for their dreams. Long-Dieth regularly enhances her curriculum by inviting guest speakers in the performing arts.

“Theatre and improvisation teaching touches on so many important life skills — confidence, grit, and intuitive thinking, for example,” she said in a recent interview.

Middle and Upper School students have numerous options to perform on stage or explore supporting roles in set design, lighting design, sound design, and audio recording through 20 performances each year. Several performance opportunities are opened to Lower School students, such as the upcoming production of L’il Abner.
