Open House Tips

It is easy to get overwhelmed while touring a campus, but getting a better sense about whether a school is a good fit for your child (and family) all comes down to asking questions that are important to your family.

Here is another list of specific questions you can consider asking at an Open House, private tour, or other school visit:

All Families
  • What is the school’s educational philosophy?
  • Do teachers engage students, asking questions that stimulate them and encourage free thinking?
  • How does the school approach discipline?
  • How does the school keep parents informed?
  • What kind of support does the school provide for students who need extra help?
  • What kind of service and character-building opportunities are offered to students?
  • Does the school provide healthy food options? How are students with food allergies accommodated?
  • What types of organized community activities (retreats, fellowship events, field trips, class trips, parent events, family events, etc.) are offered to students and their families?

Especially for Early Education - Lower School
  • Does the school offer before and after care?
  • What type of enrichments and athletic opportunities does the school provide?
  • Is student work displayed in classrooms? Do the assignments seem thoughtful and meaningful?
  • How much outdoor play time do students get?
  • Are world language classes (French, Spanish, etc.) offered to students?
  • What type of performing arts opportunities are offered to students?

Especially for Middle School - Upper School
  • What world language classes are offered to students?
  • What kind of emphasis does the school place on college counseling?
  • Does the school have a good selection of Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes?
  • What percentage of students take the SAT or/and ACT?
  • What types of colleges do graduates of the school go on to attend?
  • What type of arts education and arts electives are offered to students?
