Freshman Clara Conatser was recently named to two honor bands in Louisiana: the Louisiana Music Educators Association District VI Honor Band, and the All-Parish High School Honor Orchestra. In the fall she was also named to the LMEA All-State Band.
The LMEA District VI Honor Band concert took place on January 21 at Tulane University's Dixon Hall after three days of rehearsal. Elementary, junior high, and high school bands performed. Clara was chosen to participate in the high school group based on her All-State Honor Band audition and selection in the fall of 2017. This was Clara's sixth consecutive year in the District VI Honor Band, and her first year in the high school group. The Senior High Honor Band was led by Colonel John Bourgeois, Director of the United States Marine Band for many years. It performed four selections ranging from the "English Folk Song Suite" to a John Philip Souza march, "Sound Off," arranged by Colonel Bourgeois.
Clara also took part in the All-Parish High School Honor Orchestra from January 25-27 at Baton Rouge Magnet High School. Students were selected from throughout the state. Dr. Jean Montes of Loyola University and the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra (of which Clara has been a member for 5 years) conducted an impressive program of seven pieces, starting with "Procession of the Nobles" by Rimsky-Korsakov. The presentations included a Berlioz and a Haitian selection, and culminated with "March Slav" by Tchaikovsky. This was the inaugural weekend of the high school orchestra.
