Southern Louisiana was devastated by the effects of Hurricane Ida. Our small St. Martin’s community is not excluded from this. We have families, teachers, administrators, and staff members who are still picking up the pieces of what they lost on August 29.
As our motto says, St. Martin’s teaches our students to abide by three pillars: faith, scholarship, and service. The pillar of service could not be more vital than it is today. StM Saints have worked together to offer assistance in this time of need.
Robby Stanley, Makerspace Coordinator, lives in Crown Point, an area that was devastated by Hurricane Ida. To help his community, Robby contacted Joe LeCoq, Director of Food Services, to see if the dining hall at St. Martin’s had any food it could spare. Joe jumped at this chance to help Robby by donating trays of shrimp pasta.
StM student Quinn Boutchard ’22 has been raising money through bake sales for the American Red Cross, as well as spending weekends helping to clear debris.
Students from across the divisions (including Trey, Lee, and Kelly Dieth; Sophie Chailland; and Eli and Charles Patrick) came together to package food at St. Charles United Methodist Church to distribute to impacted families in the area. With their hard work, they were able to help feed 500 to 700 families over two Saturdays.
These are just a few of the stories of the tremendous work that our StM community is doing to give our neighbors some relief. To highlight these stories and more, our Upper School production studio team is producing the year’s first student podcast highlighting how the St. Martin’s community is living its mission in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida.
This student-directed podcast, which Lauren Crowell ’23 produces, will interview a variety of students, faculty, and staff to discuss how St. Martin’s is serving its neighbors. The podcast, guided by Denise Altobello, Director of Learning Innovation + Design, and Maureen Smith, Production Studio Coordinator and AP Computer Science Instructor, will be posted in the coming weeks.
If you are looking for ways to support the StM faculty and staff as they recover from the effects of Hurricane Ida, StM has created an Ida Relief Fund. This fund will go towards helping our faculty and staff members who suffered great losses and were displaced by the disaster.
Please consider donating (click here
