Ready to Change the World: St. Martin’s Class of 2021 Prepares to Graduate

On Friday, May 28, members of the Class of 2021 will receive their diplomas on the stage of the Solomon Theater in the school’s 71st Commencement Ceremony. In the days leading up to their special milestone, the near-graduates are completing a few final requirements and have observed time-honored StM traditions.

Senior Favorites
The Upper School announced this year’s senior favorites recently in a virtual video call. This StM custom dates back to the first graduating class, in 1951, which selected two students for their outstanding loyalty and devotion to the school. They came to be known as Mr. and Miss St. Martin’s, and in later years other ‘favorites’ were added.

Mr. and Miss St. Martin’s for the Class of 2021 are Chris Catinis and Katie LaForge.

Prudence Dudley and Monte Lewis were selected as Most Athletic. Wittiest in the senior class are Erica Ricci and Thomas Devall. Christian Pevey and Camila Figueroa were voted as Most Spirited. The Most Likely to Succeed in the Class of 2021 are Hunter Richardson and Izzy Bartholomew. Selected as Friendliest seniors were Ford Millican and Clara Conatser. Mya Porter and Nic Arensman were selected as the Most Artistic members of the class.

Alumni Luncheon
Before starting exams, the Class of 2021 closed out its last week of classes with a busy, fun-filled final day on Friday, April 30.

The Alumni Association hosted a New Alumni Luncheon for the Class of 2021 as an official welcome into St. Martin’s Alumni Association. Seated on the lawn in the quad, socially distanced on StM beach towels, seniors enjoyed a delicious boxed lunch.

Senior Chapel
Senior Chapel is a treasured St. Martin’s tradition for the graduating class. This St. Martin’s tradition, an idea of Fr. Ralph Byrd, began in 1984. Then-class president Lester Coe ’84 helped facilitate the first Senior Chapel as the class’s homage to the school.

Senior Chapel this year was held after the Alumni Luncheon. Members of the Class of 2021 shared some of their favorite St. Martin’s memories, from Lower School to the present. Scattered among the reminiscing were photo slideshows, musical performances, and liturgical readings.
After the chapel service, the Class of 2021 processed two by two, some with tears of joy in their eyes, to The Bell, located in the heart of campus. Standing in what was the heart of the original Green Acres campus, The Bell has been a fixture of St. Martin’s since the school’s earliest days. With family, friends, and faculty surrounding them, each senior rang The Bell once to signal the close of this chapter in their lives.

13+ Year Clubs
Members of the senior class who have been at StM since pre-k and kindergarten are known as The Julie Dieth 14-Year Club and 13-Year Club, respectively. Alexis Jurisich joined StM’s 13-Year Club, while Eric Berthelot, Clara Conatser, Thomas Devall, Prudence Dudley, Camila Figueroa, and Ford Millican joined the 14-Year Club. Seniors who have been at St. Martin’s since starting in the George Cottage become members of the 15+-Year Club. Three members of the Class of 2021 became members of that club: Isabella Bartholomew, Samantha D’Arensbourg, and Sofia Ortega.
College Bound
St. Martin’s Class of 2021 is headed off to 28 colleges and universities across the country (and world). This group of 54 seniors submitted 400+ college applications. Sixty-three percent of the Class of 2021 will be attending out-of-state colleges, and two percent of the Class of 2021 will attend college internationally.
