Girls’ Cross Country Is the State Champions, Boys Take Fifth Place

St. Martin’s cross-country teams traveled to Natchitoches for the LHSAA Cross Country State Championships. The competition took place Monday, November 16. Race conditions were excellent due to a dry course, cool temperatures, low humidity, and sunny skies.

Girls’ Varsity
The varsity girls’ cross country team won the 2020 LHSAA Class 1A Girls’ Country State Championship race. The race featured awesome work by a small squad of dedicated athletes who begin their journey in June. Leading the way for the Saints was senior Isabella Bartholomew, who finished 2nd overall earning a silver medal and certificate recognition. Izzy was also Academic All-State for the sport of cross country. Also joining Izzy in the Top 10 were Rian McManus in 6th place and Kaitlyn Hall in 8th place. Both girls earned certificate recognition as top 10 finishers. Rounding out the scoring five were two tough 7th grade girls. Juliet Whitaker placed 11th and Nia Norton placed 13th. Also representing St. Martin’s in this race were Lauren Bone and Maria Cusimano.
Boys’ Varsity
This year’s boys’ squad, while young, steadily improved throughout the season and put forth a strong effort at this year’s cross-country state championships. Blake Verdigets led the team finishing 10th overall and earning certificate recognition. Randy Dunkin finished in 16th place, followed by Tommy Garvey in 33rd place. All three had season- and lifetime-best times on what is a slow course. Rounding out the top five were Daniel Thompson and Peyton Crosby. Also representing St. Martin’s in this race were Harris Huber and James Garvey. The team finished 5th overall.
