Junior Attends Honor Performance Series in New York
Junior Clara Conatser recently attended the Honors Performance Series (HPS) at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She played first chair, French Horn, in the High School Honors Symphony Orchestra portion of the HPS. She was also chosen to be in their High School Honors Band that will perform at Vienna’s Musikverein this summer. Clara was sponsored by Mollie Pate, principal horn for the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

Prior to the HPS Carnegie Hall concert on Feb.2, performers came together for several days of rehearsals with renowned conductors prior to performances. Angela Woo conducted the 2020 High School Honors Symphony Orchestra. The group performed La damnation de Faust by Hector Beriloz, Duskk by Steven Bryand, Symphony No. 5 by Tchaikovsky and Glop from The Comedians by Dmitri Kabalevsky. Steven D. Davis will conduct the 2020 High School Honors Band at Musikverein.

In addition to rehearsals and meeting other musicians from all of the US and several other countries, Clara and her fellow performers enjoyed sightseeing in New York including taking in a Broadway play, Times Square, the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, and a celebration cruise around Manhattan after their performance.

This HPS was established to showcase talented young musicians in world-renowned locations. Students from across the world are nominated. Nominees are then invited to apply and must submit a completed application form, performer biography, and audition recording. Completed applications are reviewed by an expert board of music professionals. Selected musicians are assigned to ensembles of Mixed Choir, Treble Choir, Band, String Orchestra, and Full Orchestra.

Clara is not the first student from St. Martin’s to be selected for the series. In 2012 Adler Hyatt ’14 participated in the HPS Carnegie Hall concert as a member of the Honors Choir. In 2014 Mya Carter ’15 and Abbey Sims ’16 sang as part of the choir. Madison Aucoin ’16 was selected for the choir at the 2015 performance.
