Jenny Velasquez has been named St. Martin’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator. Working with Head of School Merry Sorrells and St. Martin’s Leadership Team, faculty, and parents, Velasquez will provide strategic leadership and oversee the school’s efforts in
diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice. Velasquez will serve in this new capacity concurrently with performing her duties as the head of Middle School.
As St. Martin’s embarks on a strategic planning process, the school is inviting a variety of stakeholders to contribute their reflections as it designs a roadmap for the future. Part of this strategic planning process will include taking a look at the current state of St. Martin’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and aligning the school’s practices with its identity as an Episcopal school.
Velasquez is tasked with monitoring progress and recommending adjustments in connection with the school’s strategic plan as it pertains to diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice
Issues. In addition, she will work with the Admission and Human Resources departments to help recruit and retain a diverse student body and faculty/staff. She will also act as liaison to and develop strong relationships with the school’s various diversity and inclusion-related groups, and respond to diversity- and equity-related issues among the student body as they arise. In addition, Velasquez will plan, develop, and market diversity and inclusion-focused education, programs, and events for faculty, staff, students, and families.
One of Velasquez’ first initiatives is the creation of a committee composed of parents, students, faculty, staff, and alumni interested in discussing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion as it relates to St. Martin’s community. If you would like to join the committee, please contact Jenny Velasquez at Jenny.Velasquez@stmsaints.com.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program
St. Martin’s is a community grounded in engagement, growth, and diversity. We believe that diversity is essential to a complete academic experience, and that students’ learning experiences are enriched by the diversity of our community.
The school is committed to the continued development of an inclusive and equitable community in which all individuals can participate and contribute to the life of the school, regardless of race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of their identity. We are actively working to gain a deeper understanding of how we can honor diversity in our school community.
At St. Martin’s, diversity means we celebrate and embrace our differences and our commonalities and encourage the conversations around them. We view diversity as a blessing and we believe equity and inclusion ensure that every member of our community has access to the full St. Martin’s experience.
