As a fitting end to a wonderful year, the Lower School celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2027 at the annual Recognition Program on Friday, May 24. Family, friends, and fellow students gathered in the Solomon Theater to laud the class and send it on its way as the students move up to Middle School. Lower School Head Ford Dieth ’89 addressed the crowd and congratulated the fourth graders on their accomplishments before faculty presented awards.
The Shilling Award was presented out of love and gratitude for Penny Shilling, former teacher and friend. This year, it was awarded by the faculty and students to Grayson Lambert on the basis of scholarship, service, and amiability. The runners-up, Devyn McManus and Riya Shah, were also recognized during the ceremony.
The Millican Cup was presented in appreciation for the innovation of Mary Lou Millican, beloved former Head of Lower School. It was awarded to Grayson Lambert, who has excelled in academic achievement and has consistently displayed the characteristics of good citizenship.
The Marjorie Conatser Award was presented in thanksgiving for the vision and dedication of Marjorie Conatser, a former teacher and Head of Lower School. This year it was awarded to Riya Shah, who has attended five or more years at St. Martin’s, and who possesses integrity, initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm.
Citizenship Awards were presented to Evan Crawford and Eli Patrick.
High Academic Achievement Awards were presented to students who achieved academic excellence throughout the school year. Those students were Grayson Lambert and Riya Shah.
Other students were recognized for specific subjects. MaryAlice Comer, Riya Shah, and Beckett Smuck were honored with English Awards. MaryAlice Comer and Branden Saucier received Math Awards. Science Awards were presented to Grayson Lambert and Eli Patrick. Social Studies Awards were given to Corrine Andrews and James Campo. Juan Pablo Caballero and Branden Saucier were recognized for their work with Spanish Awards. Riya Shah and Meredith Walker received Religion Awards, and both were also honored with Art Awards. Music Awards were presented to Grayson Lambert and Meredith Walker.
Reading Awards were given to Grayson Lambert (1st place), Corrine Andrews (2nd place), Juan Pablo Caballero and Beckett Smuck (3rd place - co-winners).
The Middle School is looking forward to welcoming the Class of 2027 as fifth graders for the 2019-20 school year.
