Donna Lewis has been named the recipient of St. Martin’s Episcopal School’s 2019 Dorothy Porter Service Award, Head of School Merry Sorrells announced today.
“I first met Donna in my early days at St. Martin’s. Her dedication and loyalty to the school were immediately apparent,” said Sorrells. “She speaks passionately about her current connections with past students, how they still communicate with her to share their adult stories. Donna is a St. Martin’s treasure and I am so pleased that we will be honoring her at this year’s Spirit Party.”
St. Martin’s is delighted to present this year’s Dorothy Porter Service Award to a community member who has been dedicated to supporting the mission of the school for more than 40 years.
Donna and her late husband, Don, joined the StM community in 1971 when their oldest daughter, Allison, entered first grade. Since that time, Donna has volunteered, worked as a substitute teacher, taught first grade, and served as Director of Admissions. She continues to serve the school as a member of the Board of Visitors.
The Lewises put their children, Allison Lewis Wagner ’82, also a former faculty member, and Melissa Lewis Salus ’84, through school at St. Martin’s. Their granddaughter, Taylor Michals ’09, is also an alum, as is their nephew, Beau Bethune ’92.
Before Don passed away in 2013, he and Donna created the Lewis Lagniappe Fund for Students. Now in its sixth year, the fund provides assistance with the incidental costs of an StM education beyond tuition. Items such as a sport coat, a musical instrument, or athletic cleats may seem inconsequential, but small items can help students feel their best, perform at a higher level, and reach their full potential.
St. Martin’s invites all alumni and community members to attend the annual Alumni Spirits Party on May 11 when Donna Lewis will be honored.
History of the Dorothy Porter Service Award
The Dorothy Porter Service Award was established in honor of the beloved longtime teacher, who was a part of St. Martin's from its beginning. Even after her retirement in 1983, Mrs. Porter was actively involved in the school. She exemplified grace, commitment, historical love for the school, and an enduring spirit. With the Dorothy Porter Service Award, St. Martin’s honors Mrs. Porter and her commitment to St. Martin's. The award recipient must be an exemplary St. Martin's citizen who has consistently served the school with time, talent, and treasure and who represents the motto, philosophy, and mission of St. Martin's: Faith, Scholarship, and Service.
