The high honor marks a significant milestone for ISAS and St. Martin's
St. Martin’s Head of School Dr. Merry Sorrells, a longtime leader in the New Orleans area's independent school community, has been named the president of the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) board of directors.
Dr. Sorrells, pictured at left with ISAS Executive Director Scott Griggs, will be the first female president of the ISAS board of directors in its nearly 70-year history, and will serve in this volunteer position while simultaneously fulfilling her responsibilities as head of school.
The ISAS is a non-profit membership association of independent schools. Founded in 1955, the association has 90 member schools, including 15 schools in Louisiana. Sorrells has served in several capacities on the ISAS board prior to her appointment as president. Her new role becomes effective this year.
Dr. Sorrells has an Ed.D. in Executive Leadership from the University of Holy Cross, a Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of New Orleans, and a B.A. in International Relations from Principia College. She has two decades of experience as an administrator, having served as head of school at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, as director of advancement and director of admissions at Isidore Newman School, and as associate head for admission and marketing at Trinity Episcopal School. She and her husband, Kim Walter Sorrells, live in the Van Slate House on St. Martin’s campus. They have four children and six grandchildren. All six grandchildren attend St. Martin’s.
