From concerts to chapel services to parties to collection drives for those in need, the St. Martin’s community is preparing for the holidays and celebrating Advent and Christmas.
All members and friends of the St. Martin's Episcopal School community are invited to campus for a celebration of Lessons and Carols. The special holiday event will take place on Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dan and Frances White Chapel. The program will include musical offerings and scripture readings by students and faculty from all divisions.
Students in Lower and Middle School are participating in Lessons and Carols within their divisions as well. This beloved Episcopal tradition is a series of scripture readings with a hymn between each one. Altogether, the service tells the Christmas story. Lower and Middle School will celebrate on Friday, Dec. 21. Upper School will have a division Christmas Chapel on Dec. 13.
Service and Collections
Advent is traditionally the time to prepare for Christ’s arrival, and many people do so by assisting their neighbors, near and far, to experience the joy of Christmas. St. Martin’s students are no exception. Several collection drives have been scheduled:
George Cottage will collect diapers and unopened wipes, lotions, and gift cards. These will be donated to the Junior League New Orleans Diaper Bank. This collection will take place Dec. 3-20.
Middle School will collect donations of new toys (fifth and sixth grades) and peanut butter for Second Harvest (seventh and eighth grades). Middle School students should deliver donations to their advisers.
Upper School is collecting new, unused toys now through Dec. 7 for children ranging in age from newborn to early teens. The drive benefits Angels’ Place. Donations may include board games, balls, puzzles, or toys of any kind. It is requested that no items be donated that may be perceived as violent in nature, such as toy weapons. Also, no stuffed animals are accepted. Unwrapped toys can be dropped off in the Upper School office or Ms. Heather Patterson’s office.
Lower School students will host Christmas programs for family and friends. The pre-kindergarten through first grade Christmas program, “Great Big Story,” will take place Thursday, Dec. 20 at 8:30 a.m. in the Solomon Theater. This program will also feature the George Cottage three-year-old students. Second, third, and fourth grades will present ”The MK Christmas Special” at 10:00 a.m. on Dec. 20, also in the Solomon Theater.
Parties and Celebrations
On Saturday, Dec. 15, the Performing Arts Department will host Cookies with Santa, a fun-filled event for the entire family. This will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in Saints Hall. Attendees will celebrate the season with cookies, hot cocoa, and a visit from Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their elves. Come join the fun and have a picture taken with Santa, listen to storytelling by Mrs. Claus, create a holiday craft, and enjoy holiday music. Participants will also go home with a bag of reindeer food for when Santa visits their homes. Cost: $15 per family, cash or check only.
Even the littlest Saints are getting into the Christmas spirit. Students in the George Cottage will celebrate the season with Christmas parties. The Buds class will celebrate with a special holiday breakfast on Dec. 20. The three-year-old classes will host their holiday party the same day in the Little Gym. On Dec. 21, the one-year-old and two-year-old classes will celebrate with parties in their classrooms and the Little Gym, respectively. Lower School students will have parties in their classrooms on Dec. 21 to celebrate the season.
