UPPER SCHOOL

Visit the Merrick Visual Arts Center while Upper School classes are in session, and you will experience the energy and vitality of our program.  Hands-on studio work, student critiques, artist research, art presentations, and visiting artists are all important aspects of a student’s art class experience. Many students take classes beyond the beginning level. Most Upper School art classes are semester-long.   The Visual Arts curriculum consists of Art I, a foundations course in drawing, design, painting and sculpture.  Art II classes include more advanced drawing, painting, ceramics and sculpture.  Art III focuses on portfolio development, fibers and ceramics.  For the serious art student, St. Martin’s offers the Advanced Placement in Studio Art course which is year-long. Student artwork is prominently featured in “The Lyre,” which is the school’s art and literary publication, as well as in art displays throughout our campus. Annual field trips to the New Orleans Museum of Art and Sculpture Garden, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the New Orleans School of Glassworks, and local galleries enrich students’ art experiences beyond the classroom

From Quarterback to Teacher

"I have great memories of my two years as the quarterback for the St. Martin's Saints. The sense of leadership I learned as a St. Martin's student-athlete has served me well in life, especially as a teacher and in my work with Project Adventure."
Guy Farber, Class of 1982 - Project Adventure, 5th grade teacher, parent
