Late Start Wednesdays (LSW) provide an opportunity for students to choose programs of interest to them if they need or want to be at school before 8:45.  However, the school day begins at 8:55 (the warning bell rings at 8:50) and Middle School students are not required to be on campus until that time.   However, both the Dining Hall and the Martin Family Library will be staffed.

There are several options available for students who arrive at school before 8:45.  At 7:40 MS students can choose to go to Saints Plus.  Saints Plus participants will be escorted to the gym. At 8:10 a second group of Saints Plus participants will be taken to the gym.  Also available will be Music Plus from 7:45 to 8:45 where students from 4th-8th grades will have an opportunity to participate in a music appreciation/band program on a quarterly basis.  Middle School students will hear more about this program during the first week of school.  This option is limited to ten students per quarter.

The Dining Hall staff will be serving breakfast and MS students may go to the Dining Hall with a parent or other adult.  The serving line will be open from 8:00 to 8:30.  Students may remain in the Martin Family Library to do homework and study. This is also an excellent time for families who wish to set up an outside tutor to work with their child.

We are initiating an enrichment program in Mandarin that will be available to students in grades 7 through 12.  This enrichment class will be held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:15 to 7:50 and on Wednesdays from 7:45 to 8:45.  Students who wish to participate in this program must attend all of the meetings, not just the Wednesday morning class.  Enrollment is limited, and more information will be available later on the StM website and in the MS Office.

Lastly, LSW will provide a great opportunity to set up dental or medical appointments without missing class time.  All students will be dismissed from their activities or the library at 8:45, and school will begin promptly at 8:55.

Remember, these are your choices at school:

• Saints Plus (2 sessions - 7:40 and 8:10)

  • Music Plus (7:45 - 8:45)
  • Mandarin Enrichment (7:45 - 8:45 for 7th and 8th grade only)
  • Library (7:30 - 8:45)
  • Breakfast with Parents
  • Tutoring

The transition from Lower School to Middle School is one of the greatest challenges students encounter. Our teachers recognize the many physical, intellectual and social changes taking place all at once, and make the transition as smooth as possible. In addition to the strong academic curricula, we incorporate programs that address the social and emotional needs of Middle Schoolers.

Academic offerings include English, math, science, social studies, language (French, Latin, and Spanish) religion, life skills, drama, art, instrumental and choral music and physical education. Additionally, accelerated courses are offered to those students who qualify for an even more rigorous challenge.

A primary focus on Middle School education is the exploration of the relationships between the different academic areas and how each works independently and congruently with one another. We believe that skill building, cognitive reasoning, inquiry and experimentation are all important aspects of the learning process.

Throughout the year, students participate in a wide variety of service projects and field trips within the community. In order to help students learn the importance of responsibility and teamwork, they work closely with teachers to plan special events during the year.

The entire Middle School experience is designed to provide a well-rounded education that enhances our students intellectually, emotionally and spiritually during these very important transitional years.

My Favortie Thing about St. Martin's

"My favorite thing about St. Martin's is playing middle school football. The coaches make it fun, and I love being a Saint!"
