St. Martin's Episcopal School is pleased to announce the newest inductees into its Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. Gerald Lewis '89, Ashley Tappin Doussan '93, Barbara Farris '94, and the 1991 State Championship Baseball Team will be inducted in a ceremony on Friday, September 30 as part of the school's Homecoming Day celebration. This is the sixth annual Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame class, which recognizes individuals and teams who were involved in interscholastic athletics as a player, coach, athletic trainer or administrator and who distinguished themselves in any of these capacities while at St. Martin's. Past inductees include: The 1951 Metro Championship Football Team, Coach Tony Porter, Ben Tisdale ‘54, John Eastman '64, Glenn Johnson Brady '65, John Girault '55, the 1969 Class A State Track Champions, JoAnn DeMartini '82, Kate McCall '79, Chris Delaune '91, the 1978 Volleyball State Championship team, Linda Tuero Lindsley ‘68 and William Ball ‘73. Fr. Walter Baer, Interim Headmaster, states, "Our alumni are an integral part of our community at St. Martin's, and this makes honoring our alumni athletes such a cause for celebration. We always strive to more closely connect our alumni with our students. The opportunity for our students to meet and learn about the tremendous accomplishments of our alumni athletes is a win-win for both groups and strengthens the school community by connecting past and present."
Gerald Lewis '89 (Basketball): During the two-year period of 1987-1989 while at St. Martin's, Gerald Lewis scored a total of 1,243 points, the only player in St. Martin's history to achieve 1,000 points in two years. As a senior point guard at St. Martin's, Gerald averaged 23.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 5.0 steals per game. He was selected all-state, all-district, and all-metro in both his junior and senior seasons; was district and metro MVP in 1988-89 when the team had a 22-8 record; and averaged 17.1 points, 9.1 assists and 7.2 rebounds as a junior when the team finished 27-5 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the State Class AA playoffs. Gerald was a three-year letterman at St. Martin's. Upon graduation from St. Martin's, Gerald went on to SMU where he earned first team All-SWC selection in 1993, leading his team to the SWC regular season title and an NCAA Tournament berth. During his senior season at SMU, he became one of only eight players in NCAA history to record three triple-doubles. He still holds the single-season mark for steals with 79 in 1992-93. Gerald played professional basketball for six years in the Croatian Basketball League in Europe, where he was a five-time All-Star from 1994-2000 and was named MVP in the 1996 All-Star game. Lewis then began coaching, first at Southeastern Louisiana in 2004-05 and then at New Mexico State, where the team won the WAC Tournament Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2009-10.
Ashley Tappin Doussan '93 (Swimming): At the age of thirteen while a student at St. Martin's, Ashley was the youngest swimmer ever to compete in the US Olympic Trials. During her career at St. Martin's, Ashley was a 20-time Louisiana State Champion and a six-time state record holder, three of which still stand. Tappin Doussan made the U.S. National Team in 1988 and in 1990, at age fifteen, she competed in the 1990 World Championships and won a Gold Medal in Perth, Australia. Ashley won three Gold Medals at the Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba in 1991. She then qualified for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, where she won the Gold Medal as part of the 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay team. After graduating from St. Martin's, Ashley attended the University of Florida where she won two National Championships. She then transferred to the University of Arizona where she gained five NCAA titles and in 2000, she captured two more Gold Medals as a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in Sydney, Australia. Tappin Doussan retired from competitive swimming in 2001 and began a well-respected career in coaching at the University of New Orleans, from which she retired in 2007.
Barbara Farris '94 (Basketball, Track): A member of the St. Martin's undefeated State Championship Basketball Team of 1993 and the 1994 State Championship Basketball Team (overall record 30-4), Barbara Farris was named State MVP in 1993; State MVP, All-Metro (1993, 1994); All-District (1993, 1994); and Top MVP (1993, 1994). Barbara earned a scholarship to Tulane University and later played in the Women's National Basketball Association, winning world championships with the Detroit Shock and also played with the New York liberty and Pheonix Mercury. Barbara was named in the Top 20 in USA Today's 2001 poll. In track, Barbara was a member of the 1993 District, Regional and State Championship Team. She was a District Champion in Shot put (achieving 3rd in the state in that sport); was named to the All East Jefferson Team; was a member of the 1994 District Championship Team which placed 2nd in Regionals and the State; was District and Regional Champion in shot put; and East Jefferson MVP in Field and Track. Barbara holds a school record in shot put and discus and second place record in State in discus.
1991 2A State Championship Baseball Team: The 1991 St. Martin's Baseball team achieved a 23-0 record, earning them the 2A State Championship. The championship game was a 1-0 victory over St. Frederick, in which senior Chris Delaune pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking two. The members of the 1991 State Championship Team were: Chris Delaune '91, Captain, Sam Dunn '91, Captain, Brian Goldblatt '91, Thomas J. "Beau" Bethune, IV '92, Christian Daigle '92, Paolo Messina '92, R. Ray Orrill, III '92, Rob Rhoden '92, Brett Simpson '92, Chris Wright '92, Chad Aleman '93, Chris Stakelum '93, Patrick Odom '93, Brian Axelrad '94, Jay Cerise, Andrew Stakelum '99, Batboy, Sam Dozier, Head Coach, Guy Farber '82, Asst. Coach, Camilo Mendez '94, Statistician, and Murray Burch, Trainer.
The 2011 St. Martin's Hall of Fame class will be formally inducted in a ceremony at the Upper School assembly on the morning of September 30th. They will also be honored at a private reception the evening of September 29th, and at the school's Homecoming football game when the Saints take on Ecole Classique. Kickoff at Tony Porter Field is slated for 7 p.m.
Chairman of the Alumni Athletic Commission, Brett Simpson '92, adds, "We're grateful for the opportunity to honor these alumni that succeeded in athletics during their time at STM. We look forward to a great ceremony and a great homecoming weekend."
