St. Martin’s Announces the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame Award 2010 St. Martin’s Episcopal School is pleased to announce the newest inductees into the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame. Linda Tuero Lindsley ‘68 (Tennis) and William Ball ‘73 (Football). This is the fifth Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame class, which recognizes individuals and teams who were involved in interscholastic athletics as a player, coach, athletic trainer or administrator and who distinguished themselves in any of these capacities while at St. Martin’s. Past inductees include: The 1951 Metro Championship Football Team, Coach Tony Porter, Ben Tisdale ‘54, John Eastman ’64, Glenn Johnson Brady ’65, John Girault ’55, the 1969 Class A State Track Champions, JoAnn DeMartini ’82, Kate McCall ’79, Chris Delaune ’91, and the 1978 Volleyball State Championship team. Lindsley was a four-year letter winner in tennis for the Saints. She was a standout American amateur and professional tennis star. She was the Girls 16 Champion in the USTA National Clay Court Championships in both 1967 and 1968. She also was the US Interscholastic Girls 18 Champion in 1968, the first year the event was held for girls. In 1969, she claimed championships in the National Junior Clay Courts and the U.S. Amateur Singles. Lindsley added the National Clay Courts title in 1970.
Turning pro, she won at the Cincinnati Open in 1968, reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 1971, won singles titles at the Italian Open in 1972. She was the first female scholarship female athlete at Tulane where she was a standout player for both the women’s and men’s team. Linda played for the United States Federation Cup team in 1972 and 1973. She is a 1968 graduate of St. Martin’s. Ball earned four varsity letters in baseball, basketball and track during his career at St. Martin’s. He received the title of All District in 1970. As a junior he received All District 5A, Most Valuable Player Louisiana Sportswriters Association, East Bank Guide Player of the year and St. Martin’s Outstanding Back in 1971. In 1972 as Co-captain, he again captured All District 5A, Most Valuable Player Sportswriters Association, East Bank Guide Player of the Year. He also added Class A All State, Louisiana Coaches Association All Star Game, All-South Honorable Mention, St. Martin’s Outstanding Back, Scholastic Coach All-American Honorable Mention his senior year. He rushed for 3,643 yards from scrimmage in his varsity football career. After graduating from St. Martin’s in 1973, Bill attended SMU on a football scholarship. He later performed as the stunt double for Burt Reynolds in the “The Longest Yard”. The 2010 class of the St. Martin’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame was formally inducted in a ceremony during Upper School assembly on October 8 as part of the school’s Homecoming Day celebration. A luncheon followed in the Peyton Center. They were also honored that evening at halftime during the Homecoming football game on Tony Porter Field. |
