The Upper School Performing Arts program includes a diverse selection of classes, clubs, and activities.  The Upper School Band class meets five days a week, and plays at events on campus including in the stands at football games, on our stage in concert and at other events.  Students who qualify may also take AP Music Theory when it is offered.  The Upper School Chorus is a group of singers who meet as a club twice a week. They perform in chapel, in concert, at events and venues on campus and throughout the New Orleans area.  The Upper School Chorus also travels every other year to perform at events like the “Disney Sings” Workshop and “Singabration!” at Walt Disney World, Florida and at Carnegie Hall in New York.  The Drama students travel in the opposite years to see shows and tour venues and meet professionals in the field.

Theater Arts is a strong part of the fabric of the St. Martin’s community.  Many students go on to professional careers as performers and technicians.  Our Drama program, known as The Company, produces three full-scale shows a year, including a non-musical in the fall and a musical in the spring.  Our latest addition to the program is StM Radio Theatre, a group of students who perform old-time radio-drama with live Foley sound effects.  We also offer a Drama I class, which covers basic acting and theater tech skills.  Students who qualify and wish to continue beyond Drama I may take an independent study in Drama with a focus on a specific area of interest.  Students appear on stage or work behind the scenes for all productions in the Solomon Theater.

The Solomon Theater is constantly striving to maintain a “state of the art” status. Over the last two years, the purchase of a new genie lift, updating of the sound system and an increase in sound equipment and inventory has improved what was already a wonderful performance space. We are in the process of purchasing more lighting and visual equipment to further enhance our productions and provide even more hands on training for students.  The students may train in Technical Theater with opportunities to pursue set design, lighting design, sound design, scenic painting and construction, audio editing and recording, costuming, wigs, make-up and publicity for productions.

From Quarterback to Teacher

"I have great memories of my two years as the quarterback for the St. Martin's Saints. The sense of leadership I learned as a St. Martin's student-athlete has served me well in life, especially as a teacher and in my work with Project Adventure."
Guy Farber, Class of 1982 - Project Adventure, 5th grade teacher, parent
