St. Martin’s Announces Dorothy Porter Service Award 2010

St. Martin’s proudly announces The Rev. John Stone Jenkins as the recipient of the 2010 Dorothy Porter Service Award.  Fr. Jenkins also celebrated with a special service in the Dan and Frances White Chapel, to which all those who know and remember him were invited to attend.

The Dorothy Porter Service Award was established in honor of our beloved long-time teacher, who was a part of St. Martin’s from its beginnings. Even after her retirement in 1983, Mrs. Porter was actively involved in the school. She exemplified grace, commitment, historical love for the school and an enduring spirit that is sought by everyone who is a part of St. Martin’s. With the Dorothy Porter Service Award, we honor Mrs. Porter and her commitment to St. Martin’s. The award’s recipient must be an exemplary St. Martin’s citizen who has consistently served the school with time, talent and treasures and who represents the motto, philosophy and mission of St. Martin’s—Faith, Scholarship, Service. This year’s award would be quite meaningful to Dorothy Porter, as she and Fr. Jenkins attended LSU together.

The Rev. Jenkins worked at St. Martin’s from 1953 until 1962, serving as Assistant Headmaster and Chaplain. He is a nationally known speaker, author and spiritual director who has also served as the first rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in River Ridge, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church New Orleans, Headmaster of All Saints Episcopal School in Vicksburg, Mississippi and Dean of St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Jackson, Mississippi. He and his wife Lynn live in Brandon, MS. While at Trinity, Fr. Jenkins founded the nationally acclaimed Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC), an adult education program which provides an experience in building Christian community while encouraging individual spiritual growth. The DOCC program is now housed as an extension course offered through the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, and is offered at hundreds of churches in the southeastern U.S.

States alum John Girault ’55, “The Rev. John Stone Jenkins was our Chaplain and religion teacher when I was at StM, and is one of the treasures of St Martin's early years."Padre" was one of the greatest teachers I had in my entire academic life— high school, college and law school—and was a wonderful example for us as a person.  He had a profound influence on me, as I am sure he did on many others.”

Past recipients of the Dorothy Porter Service Award include Dorothy Porter (2002), Jim Marsalis ’62 (2003), Belle Johnson (2004), Rev. Gedge Gayle (2005), Eileen Beckman (2006), Bill Rosenbaum (2007), Wally Porter ’76 (2008) and “Miss Janet” Russo (2009).
